Summer in Skopelos and Alonissos
Skopelos and Alonissos enjoy long, warm and lazy summers, the “season”
being from the beginning of May to the middle of October and the height
of the season from mid July to the end of August.
Many northern European tourists travel to the island in May, June and September, whilst in July and August, when the temperatures can be in the 40’s, the main holidaymakers are Greeks and Italians. April and May are, arguably, the best months for wild flowers, which are abundant at this time of year, when the temperature is starting to rise but hasn’t reached its height. This is also the best time of year for bird watching. August is the hottest month, but is also the time for the Meltemi winds which keep the temperatures bearable.
Skopelos has one of the prettiest harbours in Greece and retains an appealing traditional feel. During the summer months the waterfront, or paralia, comes alive as people arrive back from their winter on the mainland to reopen the many restaurants and café bars which line the harbour and the streets of the old town. The mulberry trees come back into leaf and both the islanders and tourists can be found sitting enjoying a coffee or taking a “volta” in the sunshine. This is also a time when there are more job/business opportunities available as owners take on staff for the summer or new ventures take form.
A number of celebrations take place during the summer months, including May Day and the Assumption, with one of the main festival (panigiria) periods being held during the last two weeks of August, when there is dancing most nights on the paralia and street vendors display their crafts.
The summer is also, of course, a time for swimming and lazing on the warm beaches (see section on beaches); for walking, painting and, in general, exploring the island, both along the spectacular coastline or inland amongst the beautiful pine forests.
As with the local bus service, there are additional ferry and hydrofoil services during the summer between the mainland and the islands. Charter flights in to Skiathos usually start again at the beginning of May.
